Meibomian Gland Dysfunction — a common cause of Dry Eye.
Along the edges of your eyelids are tiny oil glands called Meibomian glands.
Their job is simple but important: they release a fine layer of oil into your tears.
This oil helps stop your tears from evaporating too quickly and keeps the surface of your eyes comfortable and clear.
When these glands become blocked, inflamed or stop working properly, the oil layer becomes poor.
Your tears then evaporate faster than they should.
The result? Dry, gritty, tired, watery, red or irritated eyes — and sometimes vision that seems to fluctuate and improves for a moment after blinking.
This is called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or MGD, and it is one of the most common causes of Dry Eye.
The good news is that MGD can often be treated.
At Shattky Optometrists here in Hastings, Hawkes Bay, we can closely assess and image your Meibomian glands to see how well they are working and whether damage or blockage is developing.
For more significant Dry Eye, our 10-Week Dry Eye Programme may include treatments such as IPL, LipiFlow, heat therapy and gland expression, aimed at improving gland function and getting the natural oils flowing again.
