Glaucoma Awareness Month - July 2012
Article searchJuly is Glaucoma Awareness Month.............

What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is the name given to a group of eye diseases where the common feature is a gradual and irreversible degeneration of the optic nerve.
It is one of New Zealand’s leading causes of preventable blindness and if left untreated can cause irreversible damage to your eyesight.
However, when diagnosed by your optometrist, Glaucoma is almost always controllable with ongoing treatment, and your eyesight preserved.
Who is most at risk?
Glaucoma affects around 68,000 New Zealanders over the age of 40, making it one of New Zealand’s leading causes of preventable blindness.
Anyone can get glaucoma, however the following people have a higher risk:
- 60 years and older
- A family history
- Short sightedness (myopia)
- High blood pressure
- Past or present use of steroid drugs
- Previous eye injuries
What can you do to lessen the risk of Glaucoma?
- Have an eye examination
Regular eye checks are the only way to detect Glaucoma as the years go by.
Those with risk factors should be examined before the age of 45 and every 2 years after that. - Exercise your body
Regular aerobic exercise has been shown to contribute to a decrease in eye pressure and it may also decrease the risk of degenerative eye conditions including Glaucoma. - Change your diet for the better
A diet high in saturated fat and sugar may increase risk of diabetes which will increase your risk of Glaucoma. So eat diets rich in vitamins, minerals, healthy proteins and omega 3 fatty acids. - Take care with your medications
There are many treatments for allergies, such as antihistamines and decongestants that contain medications that can interact with some types of glaucoma. - Stop Smoking
There is a strong link between smoking and blindness from age related eye disease
Don’t leave it until it’s too late, talk to us today about an eye examination.
We look forward to seeing you.
