Hawke's Bay Science and Technology Fair

The HB Branch of the NZ Association of Optometrists supports this event with up to $300 in Special Prizes available to students who include aspects of Visual Science in their projects.

This can include any project within the following subjects:

  • The Eye
  • Vision and Visual Acuity
  • Optics
  • Light
  • Colour and/or Colour Vision
  • Psychophysics
  • Neurophysiology
  • Other associated topics accepted by the Optometrist Judges

Note that under the Judges Rules for the Fair, the Special Prizes are not awarded to a project simply because it falls within the subject area of a specific prize. The project in question has to have already been awarded an Outstanding, Highly Commended, or Commended prize in their relevent age category by the Fair Judges. This ensures that Excellence is rewarded.

Two of our branch members judge the exhibits and provide the following Special Prizes depending on the calibre and number of exhibits in the category:

  • Up to one prize of $100 to the senior level            (Yr 11+    )
  • Up to one prize of $100 to the junior level              (Yr   9-10)
  • Up to two Prizes of $50 to the Intermediate level  (Yr   7-8  )

We do this to raise the awareness of Optometry as a career choice for students, and believe that the Science and Technology Fair is a wonderful opportunity to do so.

We encourage students to consider these subjects for their projects, there are some fascinating aspects of Science at work here, and we would love to help you learn about them!
