From October 2007, families with Community Services or High Use Health cards now qualify for subsidised optometrists visits and a subsidy toward the cost of glasses for their children up until their 16th birthday. The age limit was previously eight years old, so this is fantastic news for families who have older children with eye problems. The subsidy amount is $281.25 (including GST). A further $50 (including GST) is available for childern that require an adult size frame.
The five areas that can be accessed under the subsidy are:
  • Examination
  • Frames
  • Lenses
  • Eye patches
  • Repairs

Let's see how well you can see!

In addition to offering you advice on the very latest in fashion frames and sunglasses, we offer a range of eye examination services to help us provide the best eye care.

Acuity testing

The overall comprehensive eye examination assesses general eye health and if required an appropriate corrective lens prescription issued. To accomplish this a number of tests are conducted.

Acuity testing is simply testing vision sharpness. Distance and near vision are checked. You will be asked to read an eye chart with each eye. An occluder, a small paddle like item, is used to cover one eye while the other eye is tested. The smaller the letters that can be distinguished, the better your visual acuity. Your Visique optometrist also will carefully test eye muscle balance to see how easily the eyes move and focus individually and together.

Testing for refraction errors

Refraction is the process in which the optometrist conducts a series of tests to determine the optical prescription required to correct vision at a particular distance. For this a phoropter, a mask like instrument, is positioned so that each of your eyes sees through a separate lens in the mask.

Sometimes a patient may worry about giving the "wrong" answer about which lens makes the letters look better. There is no need to be concerned about possibly giving the wrong answer as usual checks are in place to rule out such errors.

Field of vision testing

A field of vision test is to check central and peripheral vision. While you look straight ahead your Visique optometrist will test your visual field to determine your sight capabilities.

Eye health examination

Microscopic examination

A non-invasive examination of the eye both inside and out is crucial in finding signs of disorder or illness.

The cornea is regarded as the clear "window" of the eye. A bio microscope or "slit lamp" is used to examine the cornea. This microscopic examination of the cornea segment allows the your Visique optometrist to check the general health of the cornea for irregularities. The test is external and completely painless.

Eye pressure test

A comprehensive eye health examination will always include tonometry test, a measure of the pressure of the fluid in the eye. If the pressure in the eye is too high there may be damage to the nerve at the back of the eye, one of the causes of glaucoma. A tonometer uses a painless puff of air to read internal eye pressure.

Keratometry examination

Keratoconus is a vision disorder that occurs when the normally round cornea becomes irregularly cone shaped. Using a keratometer your Visique optometrist checks the front curvature of the cornea's surface. This examination is particularly important for anyone interested in contact lenses. Like all other examination procedures the test is painless and without discomfort.

Opthalmoscopy examination

Using an ophthalmoscope, a non-invasive, hand held instrument, your Visique optometrist can conduct an examination of the inside of the eye. The ophthalmoscope has a bright light, which illuminates and magnifies the interior of the eye. Cataracts, retinal problems, damaged blood vessels can be found in this examination. Damaged blood vessels may indicate diabetes or high blood pressure.

About pupil dilation

Pupil dilation means temporarily enlarging the pupil. This is done with eye drops. Dilation allows a more complete internal view of the eye and is sometimes used when a more comprehensive examination is required. The pupil of the eye returns to normal when the drops wear off. Because of the time required for the drops to wear off varies from person to person, you may want to bring someone to drive you home. If alone your Visique optometrist will advise you when you are able to leave. Wearing sunglasses after pupil dilation relieves glare.

Retinal photographic image

Using a digital retinal camera your Visique optometrist may photograph the back of the eye. The retinal camera is a recording tool that enhances the early detection of any abnormality or eye disease. Just as a dentist uses x-ray as part of the dental care process, so the retinal photograph provides the optometrist with critical information and a record of any changes that have occurred between examinations.

Where to from here?

On completion of the eye examination we will advise you what the examination has shown regarding your eyes and if required provide you with a prescription for corrective spectacles or contact lenses and discuss the range of lens options available. You are now ready to select your new spectacle or contact lenses.

If you have any concerns with how to see sharper, how to see better, vision blurry, near blurry at computer, distance is blurry, golf blurry or in need of safety lenses or sports lenses then contact us.

In the event of any irregularity remedial treatment will be suggested or you will be referred to an appropriate specialist for further attention such as a doctor or Opthamologist.

We will also advise you when it is recommended to come back for your next examination, sending a reminder letter or with phone call. However, if you have concerns at any time prior to the next examination, don't hesitate to
contact us.
