About Us
100 Year Celebrations
Shattky Optometrists has been proudly serving the people of Hawke’s Bay with expert eye care and eye wear since 1906. We have a wonderful history of trusted family involvement in the business with successive father & son teams Ernest & Derek Shattky, Neil & Phil Donaldson plus Mark & Tim Eagle through to the current day. It hasn’t all been plain sailing over the years however as the practice had to cope with the 1931 earthquake and maintain quality eye care despite this significant adversity. In recent times, we have been investing in the latest technology and training to ensure the very best service. The current care includes retinal photography, therapeutic drugs, behavioural optometry, dietary advice on eye health and diabetic management. And what will the future likely hold? A growing focus on therapeutics to assist patient treatment and healing. Use the link to find out more about the Shattky history >

How we can help
When you have your eyes examined by our team of friendly staff we have three aims. They are to solve any vision problems you have, to look for any signs of eye disease and general health problems and to provide advice on the very latest in fashion frames and / or sunglasses to suit your lifestyle. We pride ourselves on our service and quality products to meet a variety of budgets.
During an eye examination a number of tests and instruments are used to measure distance and near vision. The co-ordination of your eyes, eye movement and near focusing ability is also checked. Other tests are used to measure things such as colour vision, visual fields and eye pressure.
External and internal tissues of the eye can be examined; the appearance of these may indicate eye disease or general health disorders. If there are signs of eye disease or health problems you will be advised to see an Ophthalmologist or General Practitioner for further tests or treatment.
Many of the changes caused by eye disease occur slowly and without obvious signs or discomfort and regular eye examinations greatly improve the chances of detecting eye problems. As with general health disorders, early detection allows prompt treatment, which gives a better chance of curing or controlling the disorder.
If you need corrective treatment, spectacles or contact lenses we will explain when these should be used and advise on the most suitable type of lenses for your particular circumstances. We also offer magnifiers to assist those suffering from low vision. Whether your needs are photochromic, multifocals, progressives or transitions by Essilor, we have the technology solutions to assist.
Come in and talk to our Dispensing Opticians
They will make you feel at ease and make sure you get the best options and prices that you can afford for your next pair of spectacles. They understand fashion and will make sure your spectacles suit your face and give you a new look that will see you through the next few years with style!
Michelle Hamer and Jules Marfell are fully trained Dispensing Opticians. They have done a three year course by correspondence with practical courses, assignments and exams through OTEN in Australia. It’s like an apprenticeship as you can only do it while working in an Optometry practice.
Michelle graduated in 2005 and Jules graduated in 2008. They are trained in all aspects of prescription lenses and frames and can advise you on many aspects of eye health too, referring you to our optometrists for eye examinations as needed. So come in and talk to Michelle or Jules, they are waiting to help you.
A commitment to our team
On going training and maximising of our team talent is very important to us at Shattky.

Dale Carnegie
Working with Dale Carnegie training has been an integral part of the personal growth and development of our team. Several of our team have completed the Dale Carnegie course and it has helped them focus on important areas of human relationships as well as loving the lives they lead.
